Alkyds are slow curing, long open times binders that equal slow-paced and hassle-free weathering. Recommended for meticulous modellers. Alkyds can be used as classic pigment fixers or be mixed with pigments in order to create custom weathering liquids and pastes. The binders come in three variants each suited for particular weathering and finishing tasks.
Pigments applied with VMS alkyds are "live" several hours after the solvent is long gone - they appear dry but can be manipulated. This allows you to remove portions of pigment to create unique SFX or make corrections. The beauty of Alkyds is this: you get to manipulate apparently "dry" pigment layers, then leave them to actually cure and gain durability. Once cured a pigment job will look exactly like the moment you stopped working on it and have resistance of pigment jobs created with classic fixers!
Alkyds are reversible within their open times, which differ for each binder type. You will have up to 9h to remove or make corrections while working with "standard" type which is the most flexible of alkyds. Wet FX has an open time of 3h. Unlike ENML 2.0 this binder remains active in a pigment job after the solvent is gone i.e. a pigment job appears dry but can be further manipulated, you can remove portions of pigment to create very realistic results for instance flaking mud. Acrylic Binders: Mix high gloss, instant results weathering pastes and glazes!
Acrylics are fast curing binders that yield instant results. They have the highest solids amount and sealing capability therefore are best used for all these tasks that involve creating extensive structures with high gloss, for instance heavy wet mud deposits. Recommended for experienced modellers because once dried acrylics are irreversible unless you do a total paint stripping. VMS acrylic binders come along with a novelty - Acrylic Disperser a special agent that aids while dispersing pigments within the binders allowing you to create factory grade weathering pastes and glazes in your home!
